This week’s Click-it has some thought-provoking posts as well as some practical tips. Hope you enjoy them! Also, if you meant to sign up for my latest course — designed to help you with critical donor retention — this is your last chance. I know you have the best of intentions. Your donors are super important to you, and you mean to let them know more often. You really do. But somehow you don’t get around to it as much as you should. This course will help you make it a priority — so when this time rolls around next year you’ll be in better shape than you are today. Sound good? Okay!
Now… enjoy these articles, please.
Leadership
Click-It: Why Nonprofits Must Stop Being So Grateful. This is not the type of gratitude I was talking about above. In this post on the Social Velocity blog, Nell Edgington talks about a different habit of some nonprofits, and she really hits the nail on the head. Stop being grateful for small favors. The board member who reluctantly agrees to do something. The in-kind gift you’ve no use for. The board’s approval of a salary too small to hire an experienced fundraiser. These “gifts” will only take you backwards. Be honest about what you need. Ask for what you want; don’t accept less.
Lead Conversion & Storytelling
Click-It: 5 Scientifically-Proven Tips to Drive More Conversions. I love this article by Kayla Matthews on the Convince and Convert website. All 5 tips are great, but my favorite is this one: According to Lifehacker and The New York Times, when someone is reading a story, the language center of their brain lights up, as expected. However, what’s even more interesting is that other parts of the brain also become active, including the areas that would light up if the reader were experiencing the event firsthand. This, folks, is why storytelling has become the meme du jour. It works!
Marketing Communications
Click-It: 7 Tips for Your Nonprofit Communications Plan. This is a super useful post from John Haydon on the Socialbrite Blog. Every tip is a gem. My favorite is #5. What’s yours?
Social Media
Click-It: How to Set Social Media Goals That Will Move Your Marketing Forward. This is a great reminder that the throw-spaghetti-against-a-wall-to-see-what-sticks strategy is not a great long-term plan. You need goals and targets and metrics to see if you’re hitting them. Read this Buffer post by Kevan Lee for some great tips.
