It’s not always easy to find all the good stuff across the web. That’s why I do the work for you! Thanks again to my Clairity Click-it sponsor, Bloomerang, for making it possible for me to spend the time hunting and gathering. You’ll find this is another robust issue.
Find a topic that interests you, and… click away! Whatever type of learner you are, there’s something here for you. Tactical advice. Theory and science. New approaches. Stuff to read. Stuff to listen to. Stuff to watch.
Per usual, I’d love to also share a bit of inspiration from the inimitable Seth Godin:
“It’s easy to get focused on the public-facing mouth of the funnel.
More followers.
More impressions.
More buzz, hype, promotion. Get the word out.
Just about all the time people who call themselves “marketers” spend is on this. Don’t worry about what happens later, just pour more attention into the top.
But the math is simple:
Most of the people at the top leave long before they engage, buy or spread the word.
Which means that doubling your conversion is exactly the same as doubling the number of people who are aware of you.
It means that by the time you get to 20 people (out of 1,000) who are ready to become committed fans, each of these people is worth fifty times as much effort as you’d put into getting one new stranger to be aware of what you do.
Don’t send a poorly-written mail merge to your best prospects. Send them a handwritten note.
It’s not the bottom of the funnel. It’s the foundation for your future.”
Are you spending your time wisely? Think about it. If you happen to be an enrolled ‘Clairification School’ student, this month’s Bonus Tip is largely about prioritization and time management. So don’t forget to go to your dashboard and check it out.
To everyone, it is my sincere pleasure and honor to help you find the ideas, strategies, templates and tools you need to make our world a better place.
Thank you for doing such vital and compassionate work, and giving to others on a regular basis,
Claire
P.S. Want to resolve to be an active learner next year? I am deeply appreciative to all who enroll in Clairification School. SPECIAL FEATURE: Big Thoughts
ARTICLES
Click-it: We are More United than You Think. I found this article from Stanford Social Innovation Review fascinating; perhaps you will too. A neuroscientist warns philanthropy’s bridge-building efforts may be a waste of time and money, suggesting we begin from the mantra of “first, do no harm.” If disagreements are an illusion, advocates are better served by a “reveal” strategy that highlights shared experiences and desires.
Click-it: 2024 M+R Benchmarks Study. The team at M+R does amazing work, and they’ve gone the extra mile to put a year’s worth of data from 225 amazing nonprofit partners through the X-ray machine. They’re ready to take you on a tour of digital ads, social media, email, web traffic, and more. Want to benchmark yourself against their findings? Where possible, the findings are broken out by organization size and sector. This data is robust and, amazingly, all free! Some of the findings include:
- Average online revenue for nonprofits declined by 1% in 2023, failing to keep pace with runaway growth for many sectors during the first years of the pandemic.
- Monthly giving increased by 6%, and accounted for 31% of all online revenue in 2023
- Nonprofits raised an average of $0.94 through direct mail for every dollar raised online. Direct mail revenue fell by 6% in 2023.
- Digital advertising investment by nonprofits increased by 13% — but budgeting choices varied widely between nonprofits of different sizes.
- 50% of respondents worked with social media influencers in 2023. 17% relied only on paid partnerships, and 30% used a mix of paid and unpaid influencer work.
- TikTok audiences for nonprofits increased by 112% in 2023, far faster than other social media platforms. Facebook and Instagram follower counts grew by 6% and 11%. The number of Twitter/X followers declined by 1% on average.
- Email revenue declined by 7%. The share of all online revenue directly sourced to email was 16% in 2023.
- The majority of nonprofit website traffic came from users on mobile devices — 52%, with 48% of traffic from users on desktop devices. However, 78% of revenue came from users on desktop devices.
