Hope you enjoy these links, free resources and training opportunities. Again, I’ve organized according to three of the top 5 areas I’m hoping you’re working on improving this year. This week it’s
- Major Gifts
- Donor Retention
- Online Social Fundraising
There are also “food for thought” articles in other areas, plus links to free resources and awesome upcoming training opportunities. Use ’em or lose ’em!
Major Gifts
Click-it: Any Nonprofit Can Rock Major Gifts With These 9 Tips (Part 2). Two weeks ago I directed you over to Nonprofit Pro for Part 1 of this post. You learned about the elephant-sized piñata in the middle of the room, and we talked about how sometimes nonprofits try to beat the goodies out, ending up scrambling for spare change. Today you’ll learn how to coax the piñata to unravel its own crepe paper, and give freely of its goodies. This is a much better outcome for everyone.
Donor Retention
Click-it: Want Donors to Give Again? You Must Read This. This post on the Classy Blog reminds you of the basics. Yet, for some reason, too many nonprofits aren’t doing this stuff. If you’re one of them, today is the first day of the rest of your life. Time to change!
Click-it: Trying to Get Closer to Your Middle Donors? It’s Not That Complicated. Years ago, Penelope Burk’s findings in Donor-Centered Fundraising boiled down to “treat every donor like a major donor” – to the extent that you can. In 2000 it was a lot harder to do. Today, post digital revolution, you actually can steward your mid-level donors with personal “touches” using online social tools. Here, the Association of Donor Relations Professionals (ADRP) prompts you to extend relationship-building tools beyond just major donors using today’s technology. Be sure to watch the very brief video to learn why you should focus on mid-level donors..
Online Social
Click-it: How to Double Online Giving in Six Months is a useful post by Darian Heyman on npENGAGE. He offers up a simple 3-step formula used successfully by another nonprofit; he thinks you can do it too!
Click-it: 7 Ways to Thank Someone for a Retweet. I like sharing practical tips, and this article from the Convince and Convert blog offers just that. Learn some ways to manage your social strategy and maximize the value you get in exchange for the time you spend on Twitter.
Click-it: 5 Online Communication Styles for Nonprofits from Nonprofit Tech for Good. First you create your content; next you figure out the tone of voice with which you’ll deliver it. Think about what you’re trying to accomplish before you share. What action do you want folks to take? What emotion do you want them to feel? Then consider: (1) storytelling; (2) marketing; (3) fundraising; (4) engagement or (5) curation.
More Food for Thought
Click-it: How Behavior Leads to Belief. This supremely thought-provoking article on the turnkey blog asks: “What if we began to treat our communications, indeed all our touches on our constituents, as opportunities to elicit behaviors, which would help them gain the idea that they were tight with our mission?” Ever heard about how striking a super-hero pose immediately before walking into an interview will help you ace that interview? Ever heard the adage “fake it ‘til you make it?” This is the same idea, applied to fundraising and philanthropy.
Click-it: 3 Ways to Remove Psychological Barriers to Philanthropic Giving. In case you missed this post I wrote for Bloomerang, it’s all about getting inside your donor’s mind.
