This issue marks the 13th anniversary of the Clairity Click-it Newsletter. That’s 364 issues (whoa!), all chock full of resources I hand select for you from across the web. And nothing I select will cost you a dime! I search assiduously, read every single article before sharing with you, and only select trusted resources for webinars, podcasts, e-guides, papers, reports and the like.
How can I afford the time, you wonder? I can’t! Which is why I have some sponsors to help underwrite what is, mostly, a labor of love. Please scroll down to the bottom of the page to see who they are, and maybe click on their links to learn more about them. They’re all terrific resources for you, and definitely worth your attention. I also want to extend a special shout out to my lead sponsor, Bloomerang, for all they do – beyond just their wonderful product — to help nonprofits make lasting change in their communities and the world.
If you’ve been along for the ride for a while, I hope you’ve gleaned some useful nuggets to help you in your work, and maybe even in your personal life. If you’re new, welcome! I love sharing insights, research and practices from other disciplines, including psychology, neuroscience, behavioral economics, mindfulness, for-profit marketing, and more. If you’ve found this newsletter thought-provoking, educational or just plain practical, please forward it to a curious colleague. They can subscribe here for free.

SPECIAL FEATURE: Problematic AI – Yes, Again!
Let’s begin with this piece of borrowed wisdom from one of the great thought leaders of our time:
“Tech adoption often focuses on making things easier, simpler, and pre-decided.
And yet… we can also decide to use tech to do more work, insert more humanity, and amplify flexibility…
Professionals and organizations that use AI to save time, cut costs, and lay people off are taking a lazy road to failure and irrelevance.
Those who use it to do harder, braver, and more powerful work, who figure out how to create more value and charge more for it, and who end up hiring more people to do so, will be defining our future.”
Please keep this sage advice in mind as you approach the resources listed below.
ARTICLES
Click-it: Before You Hand AI the Keys to Your Fundraising…. The whole point of this kind of tool is productivity. If it’s bringing you more work than solution, you’ve got a problem. To effectively use AI, you need to know what it can and cannot expect from it. Read this piece on the Moceanic blog to learn more. James Herlihy takes you through the story of a real-life nonprofit who learned they needed to lead – not be led by – the AI tool they purchased.
Click-it: AI won’t fix fundraising. It will simply feed on what’s been broken for years. I think this article by Mark Phillips, Fundraising Insight, is important. Because we risk losing the very reason donors trust us, and connect with us, if we simply adopt AI as the shiny new thing. Yes, there are things it can do that are very helpful. But – and this is a big but – if you automate everything, and everyone else does too, where does that leave you?
AUDIO/VISUAL
Click-it: AI Without The Hype [Listen to on-demand podcast]. Nonprofit Hub hosts Sal Salpietro, Chief Growth Officer at Daytaro, to unpack what AI really means for nonprofits. He offers a simple filter for evaluating tools (does it still work with the AI turned off?) and distinguishes AI-enabled “helpers” from AI-native “doers.” Plus, he shows how to scale AI without losing the human side of fundraising, sharing real examples of predictive modeling that reorders donor outreach and slashes list-building time.

Click-it: You can stop listening to excuses and raise more money. This is solid, foundational advice from Mary Cahalane, Hands-On Fundraising. It works for organizations of all shapes and sizes. Psychology of Giving
Click-it: Why Donors Give: The Deep Human Need to Matter. I write on the Bloomerang blog about the human need to fill one’s cup, not drain it – and how you can use this to your advantage in your fundraising. Consider how you can offer meaning, purpose and belonging to your donors. When you meet their needs, they’ll be more inclined to meet yours.
Click-it: Same Cause, Different Morality. You may think folks should give just because you’re doing “good work.” But not all such work is created equal, and fundraising appeals aren’t morally neutral. The “good work” must be something that matters to the recipient of your appeal. Something they care about. Something with which they identify. Read more by Kevin Shulman on the Agitator/Donor Voice blog.
